A Word from Your Instructor, Nancy Solari
I haven’t always Lived Full Out. My mom worked hard to take care of my two sisters and I, still managing to take business classes at night. One day, she came home from class to find us alone. She gathered us up, and we took a trip across town. We ignored her command to stay in the car and followed her down a path to a house. Through the window, we saw dad’s jacket and a dozen roses on the table.
Although I had gotten used to the times dad had become abusive toward Mom, I never thought he would go looking for a new life. When my sisters and I got back in the car, we knew things would never be the same. The four of us moved to a two-bedroom condo in the Pacific Northwest.
I wasn’t dealing well with the break-up of our family; my two sisters began losing weight, and I soon realized they both had been suffering from an eating disorder through the trauma of the infidelity and divorce. They seemed to take to their new school, and I had trouble making friends. I had just started talking to a classmate and getting used to the changes when mom finally revealed that she had breast cancer.
By this time, our dad had started a whole new family. I had nightmarish thoughts of mom leaving us. What if my sisters and I have to move in with our dad’s new wife and kids? I thought. I lived in fear that something would happen to mom, but she pulled through. In many ways, she is my inspiration. She taught me how to face adversity and win.
When I was sixteen, mom took the three of us to the eye doctor. He did the exam and left the room. We waited for him to return with the usual paperwork and instructions so we could be on our way. But he was taking longer than usual. We grew impatient, wanting to get back to our friends. When he finally did return, he barely looked at us. He began using phrases such as “genetic eye disease,” and “progressive.” He looked at each of my sisters in turn, and finally at me. He said, “You will be blind by forty.” And that was the end of the eye exam.
There were tears and silence on the car ride home. We had so many questions. Are they working on a cure? Will we be able to drive? Is it possible to have a successful life and be legally blind?
We each dealt with the news in our own personal way, but I began thinking differently about the time I had left with my sight. If I am going to be blind by 40, I thought, then I want to see as much as possible before that time comes.
My middle sister and I backpacked across parts of Europe, seeing 23 countries. We hiked the Acropolis and saw the Coliseum in Rome. I went on to attend the University of Oregon, receiving a bachelor’s in psychology and broadcasting.
In my early career, I worked on the production staff of Good Morning, America, and Entertainment Tonight. When my vision changed dramatically and I could no longer read a teleprompter, I reinvented myself. I waited tables; I became a recording artist; I was a top producer in real estate, owning my own business. In every career, there were challenges: sexual harassment in the music industry; the challenge of getting to real estate showings by public bus when I could no longer drive. The research required to find new technology to assist me in my work; the losses of the economic meltdown in 2008; a bankruptcy.
When I speak on tenacity, finding the meaning of success in life, uncovering the motivation to reach goals, the importance of hard work, I mean it because I live it.
I returned to school, receiving my life coaching degree from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. I returned to broadcasting, becoming the CEO of Living Full Out, Inc, and launching the national Living Full Out Radio Show. I was the first blind person to ever host a live-streamed talk show. Recently, I was named host of a show I created, Nonprofit MVP, a live Las Vegas competition where teams battle for a $100,000 Grand Prize. My guide dog, Frost, is my co-host.
You have the power to find your inner “motivation coach,” and learn the steps to success that take you to heights you never thought you could achieve, in spite of the challenges real life brings. At any moment, you can take your power back. You can find tools for life and success here. Welcome to Living Full Out, Inc.
